Get out, stay out: how to thrive in work

I designed this scheme for the University of Birmingham in 2012.  The aim is to match students with ‘out’ employees across a range of professions. We started with a pilot of three students, in the past 15 years hundreds have taken part, many of whom have gone on to be mentors themselves. It is administered by the Careers Network, some 50 students have been mentored in the last 5 years.

What’s it for?

Primarily, the scheme is to help students think through their coming out strategies in the workplace. Specifically it’s to help:

  • Build confidence
  • Have ‘unfiltered’ conversations with people who have been there and done it successfully

How I can help

  • Building a marketing and publicity plan
  • Working with the students’ union as partners
  • Advice on making a business case to fund such a scheme
  • Publicising a scheme to potential students and staff
  • Making the best use of feedback from participants to inform policy and practice
