EqualEngineers – Careers Fair – Nov 11th – Birmingham

Equal Engineers was set up by Dr Mark McBride-Wright and this is the first careers fair ‘focused specifically on improving diversity and inclusion in the engineering pipeline, bringing together candidates from multi-strand backgrounds and identities into one place.’ He also set up InterEngineering – a great resource for students and employers.

It was great to be invited to speak about recruitment and selection issues as part of the seminar programme running during the day. Employer fairs like this are a great opportunity to ask employers on the stands questions like:

  • why did you decide on your current job?
  • why did you choose this company?
  • what’s it like being LGBT at work?
  • what advice would you give me?
  • and what makes a really great application.

And students/graduates: please, please use your university careers service. And check out

I also spoke to most of the employers about how they attract and support LGBT employers and to offer some advice about staff networks and LGBT employees.
